Tokens for Festival Mask
instead of getting stuck with a festival mask that not even your minipet would wear ... why not award a token then you can take to the festival hat maker so he may craft the hat of your choice ... getting stuck with a demonhead mask was a real let down (don't get me started ) ... I realized the multi-millionaires we've created have little time for this game when their on the verge of making yet another MMO (hopefully nothing like what Blizzard offers) ... but a simple mask token would solve a problem ... you dont have to design any more masks (let's just say that last 5 attempts fell way short of the first two years and leave it at that) ... and the fifteen lines of code to set-up wouldn't detract from other projects (ok, it may-be more than 15 lines of code) but at least you could get the "good" years masks

I like the fact that people know I've been here long enough to have certain masks.

and before the festival mask maker, I tossed my masks for want of space ... ie. no room in the limited vault of pre-factions

If you account was activated before Halloween 2005, you can get any hat.
If you account was activated before Halloween 2006, you can get from there and on.
If your account was activated, you would only be able to get the hat that are too come.
Get my drift? I'l sign to this only if the hats you can get are those that your account was activated at the time. So newer player would not be able to get older hats

Hm... let me see...
Hm...
If you missed the last Dragon Festival, you could still trade for victory tokens and get it...
If you missed the last Wintersday, you could it completely for free...
So ANet do not really wants to keep players from getting them...
But giving them away to anyone would be just wrong...
Now we can see other sides. Player that got the hats, but lost them because:
- Re-rolled characters.
- Had only 4 characters, no mules and no upgrade storage.
- There were no Hat Makers.
- Account Hacking.
- Deletion by 'accident'.
- Other.
So it won't be bad to give some hats 'again' in some cases, either...
Now... let's see... we can't go form the character age, because they could be rerolled.
So it must be account age, like Halmyr said...
Hm... ok.
I would agree with this as long as:
- Your account must have been created BEFORE the existence of the mask.
- If the token is not an EXTREMELY rare drop, it won't be tradeabe. Never. If you easily get a token, it's for you and you only.
- You have to own the content. No factions preOrder, no tengu mask, no Prophecies, no 2005 winter masks.
Now let's think about ways to get the token:
- For free? Just one for each account. Hm... no.
- Hm... in event gifts, as an uber-supah-extremely rare drop? Maybe. It would be nice to find one in Xmas... although I have no masks to tade it for, XDDD.
- As an alternate collector option, along with the existing hat (i.e.: Victory tokens)
- As an boss-chest extremelly rare drop?
This would turn mask into 'account age' indicators, instead of 'I've been there' indicators, which they are no longer since the last masks.

OH, and Before I forge also.
The only exception to this mask would be the Tengu mask, you must have the pre-order Faction key one your account to acquire it.
And again, for any other mask, you have your account older then the hat to obtain it.

token assigned to characters acct. like pre-order weapons ... non-transferable no trades no sales ... and a tons of hoops to jump thru to obtain (sure why not) like obtaining the materials for the chef's Fest in Apr06 or something like that ... acct based would mean if your acct is '05 then you can get '05 masks etc. ... and you wouldn't get stuck with masks of marginal talent

mmmm. And what if I the people did not stay in the last day or were not there at all during the festival?
I made an effort of being there when the mad king, dwaina, grenth, etc where there to obtain my hats.
The only way I would sign this, is if the hats will be availabe if you had already owned them.

No plz -,-"
Why?
You are funny. Token is specified for PvP and Festival hat is specified for PvE. What I think Token should be exchanged for is the balthazar Faction which never have been approved.
So, I think Token should be exchange for the penalty for leaving RA. 10 Token for taking out the penalty of leaving RA.

As I understand it, when the event goes on, we are awarded one token, which we then take to the Festival Hat Trader and exchange it for a hat of our choice. We can then give him this hat to craft in the future.
And the reason this is broken is because the next time ANet releases a crappy mask, I exchange my token for a Tengu Mask, which is the only one of the two I missed that are worth wearing.

I would go for the token idea if it was implemented in the following way.
If you turn up for any one day of an event you can get a token, said token to be tradable to the event hat maker for one of the hats from that event.
Token to be none tradable to other players and has to be used before the same event occurs next year.
That way anyone who manages to get online during an event for a few minutes can have a hat to say they were there.
I would encourage arenanet to hold their festivals just before or just after the real holiday events.
In this way players who have a real life and do not play on their computers at such times can still take part.

They are HATS. They are silly tokens of fun holidays, not honor badges for an arduous ordeal.
Heck, Anet has recanted on their position that people will only have one opportunity to get festival hats several times. I personally don't see why people are so personally vested in objects that they don't use at all anyway.
And BTW, this is the best suggestion I've seen for how to acquire them.

This idea has nothing to do with PvP tokens, what are you talking about?

I was ready to /notsign, but I can get behind this idea and Mithran's expansion on it. You need to have had an active account when the things were available, customize the token or whatever so it can't be sold, no weaseling your way to prizes you didn't get via preorder, etc.
After last Wintersday, there's hardly any "I was there" value to these things anymore anyway. :P
